Information
about the Erie Yacht Club Webcam:
The EYC Webcam was installed in the summer of 2007 with the idea
that folks could watch the basin reconstruction project move forward
from their cozy warm homes during the cold winter months. The camera
is an AXIS 211
Network Camera, and will support 20 simultaneous viewers at one
time. It's widely considered the best fixed webcam around.
The camera produces full color JPEG images day and night
from it's location on the roof of the EYC clubhouse. It can be
used to make
time-lapse videos of the basin work. It is
mounted in a special heated outdoor housing which has a fog free
window. The exterior glass is treated with
RainX to keep the
window clear in foul weather.
AXIS webcams use a special browser plug-in to render the
stream of JEPG images. The first time you visit the EYC webcam
site, you will receive a web browser notice which will prompt you to
install the AXIS browser plug-in. Some Microsoft Windows Vista
users have reported trouble installing this plug-in. After
searching the AXIS support forum, I have found a solution which has
been verified to solve the problem for Vista users.
Click the start button, then all programs, then right
click Internet Explorer, and finally select "Run as Administrator" on the
popup menu
that will appear. When Internet Explorer opens, load the
EYC Webcam URL into
the address bar, and install the AXIS plug-in when prompted by your
browser.
The plug-in should install correctly with the web browser running as
administrator.
Some folks have requested that we add more webcams to EYC pointed
in other directions.
In 2008, there will be more work
done, and more webcams are on the agenda. There will be
at least two more added. The first one will be on
the Canoe House overlooking B/C and D/E docks, and the second on the Lighthouse
overlooking the Basin. These will be useful for keeping
an eye on your boat, and checking weather conditions on Presque Isle
Bay.
These cameras can be optionally connected to the televisions in
the Grill Room, and used to broadcast the
EYC Sailing Fleet Races
into the clubhouse and onto the Internet.
Finally, on to the credits. The EYC webcam, cabling, and the
protective outdoor housing was donated to the EYC by the
Boldt Family in July 2007. It was
installed by Douglas Boldt, Philip Wolford, and P/C John Murosky at
no expense.
